To start us off I'm going to share with you a nice little gem my wife and I found one night while driving home from a wedding reception. Over the air waves piped the sweet harmonies of a trio of lovely ladies from Canada - The Good Lovelies.
Their album, "Let the Rain Fall," is 13 tracks of harmonious blending of their three voices with accompaniment mandolin, banjo, guitar and friends which takes you on a roller coaster of emotions. The first track, for which the album is named, is a clap-along fiddle dance tune. The boom-chuck of the percussive parts pushes the work forward, weaving through a variety of happy lyrics (and quotations from other songs). Nothing can sink their smiles.
Free, the second track, continues the boom chuck of the first track. The back up singers invoke the feeling of rushing down the prairie on a steam engine. This track will leave listeners calling for free(bird). This feeling of movement helps the album to flow forward and makes you want to continue to listen. Other tracks invoke genre blends between blues, bluegrass, and swing. The highlight of the album comes with the back to back listening of tracks 5 & 6 (Backyard & Kiss Me in the Kitchen). The latter is reminiscent of a 50's sock hop juxtaposed with folk mandolin, carving new territory into an unknown genre.
My review - I think this is a solid album, there are a few songs that may not be my favorite, but I could listen to it straight through because of the few solid charts. This album goes into my itunes shuffle with 4 stars.
To finish my story from earlier. While in the car we only heard part of the song and didn't catch the artist. We had to keep singing the chorus all the way home in hopes of committing it to memory so we could later search for it and find out who it was that inspired us so late at night. For your listening (and viewing) pleasure, here is the song that inspired our purchase.
